Background of the Study
Sleep hygiene refers to the practices and habits that promote good quality sleep. Poor sleep hygiene, characterized by irregular sleep patterns, excessive screen time before bed, caffeine consumption late in the day, and an uncomfortable sleep environment, can significantly disrupt sleep quality (National Sleep Foundation [NSF], 2023). In Gombe State, university students, in particular, often face high academic pressures, which contribute to irregular sleep patterns and poor sleep hygiene (Eze et al., 2024).
Research has shown that poor sleep hygiene negatively affects cognitive performance, leading to issues such as poor concentration, memory problems, and difficulty learning (Walker, 2023). The detrimental impact of sleep deprivation on academic performance is well-documented, particularly among university students who face demanding study schedules (Aliyu & Obiora, 2024). This study aims to examine the impact of poor sleep hygiene on cognitive performance among university students in Gombe State, with an emphasis on how sleep disturbances hinder learning and academic achievement.
Statement of the Problem
In Gombe State, university students frequently struggle with maintaining good sleep hygiene, with a significant proportion reporting poor sleep quality and irregular sleep schedules. The resulting cognitive impairments, such as memory difficulties and reduced attention span, contribute to decreased academic performance. Despite the recognition of sleep hygiene as a crucial factor in cognitive function, there is limited research on how poor sleep habits specifically affect students' cognitive abilities in the context of Gombe State. This study will explore the relationship between sleep hygiene and cognitive performance among university students in the region.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the sleep hygiene practices of university students in Gombe State.
2. To examine the relationship between poor sleep hygiene and cognitive performance among university students in Gombe State.
3. To recommend strategies for improving sleep hygiene to enhance cognitive performance among university students in Gombe State.
Research Questions
1. What are the common sleep hygiene practices among university students in Gombe State?
2. How does poor sleep hygiene affect cognitive performance, including memory and attention, among university students in Gombe State?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve sleep hygiene and cognitive performance among students in Gombe State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Poor sleep hygiene is significantly associated with reduced cognitive performance, including lower memory and attention, among university students in Gombe State.
2. University students with better sleep hygiene will perform better academically compared to those with poor sleep hygiene.
3. Sleep hygiene interventions will significantly improve cognitive performance among students in Gombe State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on university students in Gombe State, specifically examining their sleep hygiene practices and cognitive performance. Limitations include reliance on self-reported sleep habits, which may be subject to bias, and the challenge of controlling for other factors that may influence cognitive performance.
Definition of Terms
• Sleep Hygiene: Practices and habits that promote consistent, high-quality sleep, such as a regular sleep schedule, a comfortable sleep environment, and limiting stimulating activities before bedtime.
• Cognitive Performance: The ability to perform mental tasks, including memory, attention, problem-solving, and learning.
• Sleep Deprivation: A condition resulting from insufficient or poor-quality sleep, often leading to cognitive and emotional impairments.
